Sport and Social - Lawyers Victorious
Tiger Woods may not have been involved, but the competition was still intense when the estate agents and surveyors of Portsmouth Property Association (PPA) competed against the lawyers of Coffin Mew in the local Ryder Cup Golf Challenge on the 24th June 2008.
Rowlands Castle was the venue for this year’s encounter and the weather was perfect when the teams lined up for the camera in front of the 18th green.
Two teams of 16 compete for the trophy and PPA members were hoping for a win to give a much needed boost to the property market!
The 8 morning greensome matches were evenly contested with 3 finishing all square but the lawyers held a slender 1 point lead at lunch (4½ points to 3½). Suitably fed and watered, battle resumed in the afternoon with 16 singles matches. Condition were perfect for low scoring and the lawyers took full advantage despite heroic performances from Clive Bryant, sweating over a 3 ft putt for a half on the 18th and the Pearsons duo of Sprake and Gilbert both winning on the 18th green.
However, it was all to no avail because Coffin Mew won the singles matches 9 ½ points to 6 ½ points and an overall victory margin of 14 points to 10. Revenge and bragging rights for the lawyers following 4 years of PPA dominance.
Captain Chris Upfield received the cup from George Brittan of sponsors Portsmouth News at the presentation dinner and could not contain his excitement. Each player received an individual memento for taking part and PPA captain Neil Hawkins promised a renewed effort next year.
PPA lead 9 - 6 in the series of matches.
